We Filipinos love the word tambayan. It has become a staple for us to get together in that common place with our close friends to share a laugh, drink, and be merry. Most people even have more than five tambayans, depending on where the happening is. So what does a tambayan usually have?

Some of my friends have said that a good spot would have to have a big space for huge groups, must be accessible to all, offer entertainment, and most importantly have a wide selection of drinks and good food.

In Metro Manila, a lot of commercial spots have even gathered restaurants, coffee shops, and bars to present different options for diners and guests. This system has become such a convenience and Filipinos simply love hanging around there. So here are some of those places you might want to check out:

A-venue Mall, Makati
Bazaars and sales are usually held at A-venue Mall in Makati City. Shoppers are afterwards rewarded with a good meal from the different restaurants found in the vast arcade. Some restaurants are a bit on the high-end side, but not to fear! There are still restaurants that are very much affordable. Some of the restaurants and bars at A-venue Mall are: Burger Avenue, Gasthof, 360 Restaurant and Bar, and Sicilian Express.

Hobbies of Asia, Macapagal Avenue, Pasay
Seafood lovers should not dare miss a trip down Hobbies of Asia. Dozens of stalls selling fresh seafood are found in its vast compound. Despite seafood being the main selling point of the place, some restaurants also offer alternative food. It’s a good place to hang out with family and friends, and to bring balikbayan relatives or friends. Some of the restaurants and bars at Hobbies of Asia are: Buma Seafoods Market & Restaurant, Swan Lake Restaurant, Jay-J’s Inasal, and King One Rotary Hot Pot.

Promenade, Greenhills
The Promenade offers a good variety of food—from American to Italian and Filipino. Coffeeshops, like Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and Starbucks, are also here. This provides a good place to hang out and eat because of the homey and relaxed feel. Tired and weary shoppers could just cross and indulge on their favorite foods. Some of the restaurants at Promenade are: Burgoo, California Pizza Kitchen, Sizzling Pepper Steak, and Cibo.

Tiendesitas, Pasig
Tiendesitas is commonly known more for its shops selling different trinkets, clothes, and even pets. This makes it the perfect spot for small food shops to do their business. Steering away from the usual restaurants, a trip down to Tiendesitas gives people a new way to tickle their taste buds. Some of the restaurants and bars at Tiendesitas are: Isdang Pulo sa Tiendesitas Fastfood, Nenita Farms, Minette’s Inasal, Bistro Mateo, and Bonnie’s BBQ.

San Miguel by the Bay, Mall of Asia, Pasay
A place that has garnered a huge following among families and yuppies is the San Miguel by the Bay. In the morning all they way ’til sunset, parents and their children can be found bonding along the huge breakwaters. But at night, it transforms into a different world where groups of friends and office workers come together to relax after a tiring day at work. The vast area has restaurants that offer a wide variety of food choices. Good music, good ambiance, makes San Miguel by the Bay, one good tambayan! Some of the restaurants and bars at San Miguel by the Bay are: Dencio’s, Hooters, Hawaiian Barbecue, Lydia’s Lechon, Razon’s, Aling Tonya, and Harbor View.

Sunset Quay, Manila Ocean Park
Sunset Quay (pronounced as key) is the Manila Ocean Park’s floating shopping and dining area. In the morning, Sunset Quay provides dining and hang-out places for families or students touring the park. And as the day begins to turn into night, Sunset Quay is the perfect place to watch the sunset. And at night it gets transformed and comes to life with live performances. Some of the restaurants and bars at Sunset Quay include the WhiteMoon Bar, and the Makansutra Asian Food Village.

So where’s your tambayan? If you and your barkada still don’t have your place to claim as your own, we suggest a trip to these places. Quench your thirst with your favorite drinks, fill your tummies with great-tasting food, and create happier barkada moments. You’ll soon find out that these places have taken their claim on you, and your barkada!
