EUROTEL, one of the country’s leading standard hotels, starts 2010 with more than the usual promotional activities expected of a hotel chain. Through the Office of the Managing Director, William Go, the hotel is reinforcing its commitment to the environment – with the forthcoming opening of its branch in Baguio City second quarter of this year.

Eurotel’s strong commitment will integrate systems and policies to be more environmentally-friendly in its operations. “EUROTEL recognizes how its operations impact the environment, particularly where use of water, electricity, and detergents are concerned, and therefore strives hard to incorporate environmentally-friendly principles and practices in its operations,” Go emphasized.

Go said that, “We were all humbled by Ondoy, and then later, Pepeng. We need to seriously do something about how we all contribute to environmental damages. Somehow, in some ways, we need to do something now before it becomes too late. The floods are just nature’s reminders that we have been abusing our stay here on Earth already. We have to work together now, and the hotel industry should be there at the forefront.”

While EUROTEL is beginning to make its environment and social development commitment felt by its people through their small activities in areas where they operate, Go feels that they still have a long way to go. “We have been conducting tree planting activities and crafts-making from recycled materials seminars in Baguio City and we hope to do more. However, we know those are not enough. They are good starts but eventually, we know we have to do more.”

For a start, the Hotel will maximize the use of sunlight in the design of its rooms on all possible areas of the building as well as the use of disposable but biodegradable materials for most of its packaging materials and other conservation activities to be undertaken, all geared towards helping the environment and mother earth. A step towards becoming one of the pioneer “Green Hotels” in the Philippines and in Asia.

In the pipeline is a plan to harvest rainwater for their operations in the Baguio City branch, which they plan to open to the public this second quarter of 2011. The system, if eventually implemented, will harvest rainwater and be stored in tanks thatwill be connected to the hotel’s toilet flush systems. The rainwater will also be used for cleaning and plant-watering purposes.

Go said that this is a concrete step in the right direction of being a “Green Hotel”, given that there is already a water shortage problem in Baguio City. “Admittedly, Baguio City has to do more about the fragile watershed system. As our way to help the city and its people, we want to lessen our demands on the water system by creating our own source and at the same time, investing our money and other resources wisely. After all, rainwater is free! There is ‘green economics’ there and we hope that this practice will inspire other hotels as well.”

EUROTEL wants to ensure that their “business growth goes hand in hand with environmental principles and social awareness and participation.” They believe that the hotel has an important role as well in helping push for a strong Philippine economy through the tourism industry. “The economy is facing tremendous challenges. We in the hotel industry should be more aggressive, innovative, creative and more environmentally- sensitive. Gone are the days of sacrificing the environment just because we want to be No. 1. Being ‘world-class’ should start by being sensitive to what we leave behind, our environmental footprint, including our carbon emissions.”

In the meantime, guests can enjoy their stay in their very cozy and well appointed rooms while enjoying the sumptuous meals available 24/7 at the comfort of their rooms or at their resto bars at the lobby. They have also launched their latest drinks of the month where guests can bring home some cuddly wrist-hugging stuffed toys that go with the drinks for free.
