The airline industry is not excempted from the impact of the recession. Cutbacks are put in place by the airline companies, among them skimping on basic services and even chargingfor simple amenities like pillows and blankets, leaving flyers paying more to enjoy less. One thing is becoming more certain — once you’re up in the sky, you are on your own.

Flying coach does not mean you cannot enjoy the same comfort that those in the business class do. Here are some ways you can sit in the lap of luxury with a seat in economy.

Choose your Airline wisely
Aside from maximizing the frequent flier programs for perks, do a bit of research before booking a flight. Make sure that your choice airlines have been noted to provide exceptional customer satisfaction. Paying for a cheaper flight with an airline that only adds to your travel stress isn’t really saving at all.

Check-in online as early as possible
Seats are usually available for selection up to 90 days before departure, but checking in 24 hours before boarding may give you a chance at some prime seats like the coveted exit rows that provide as much legroom as in business class.

It’s about what you don’t wear
Transcontinental flights are perfect scenarios where the adage, “less is more” rings true. Wear clothes you can move and breathe in. Loose, stretchy fabric may not be fashionable, but an elastic waist is more comfortable. If you’re more daring, bring a pair of house slippers so you can take off your shoes even before you buckle your seatbelt.

Bring your own personal spa
Although flight regulations permit carry-on liquids and gels in containers no larger than 2.9 fluid ounces, getting your favorite travel-size moisturizer in and lip balm on board is the first step towards enjoying a spa moment. Bring the comforts of home—bar of chocolate, eye mask, or horseshoe-shaped pillow—your body will thank you later.

Be kind
Stories of polite and friendly passengers smiling and charming their way into business class are all but long gone. Even if you aren’t lucky enough to be awarded with an upgrade, being relaxed and courteous to fellow passengers and flight attendants doesn’t go unnoticed and puts you in a better mood as well.

Pack your own entertainment
While this may be a no-brainer, be prepared with your fully charged MP3 player, favorite magazine, Sudoku puzzle, or handheld entertainment system.

Get Some Sleep
Physical comfort will increase the odds of you nodding off to sleep and avoiding the whole issue of being stuck behind the proud parents of a cute, albeit, incessantly crying infant. Sleeping for the duration of the flight often means the difference between arriving well-rested or with swollen, red eyes.
