At the end of the rainbow lies the proverbial pot of gold. At the southeastern end of Luzon, another .jar full of riches beckons for travelers seeking fortune, excitement, and adventure! No wishing required — just a seven-hour bus trip or one-hour flight would do and tourists can reach Bicolandia. The region is composed of six provinces (Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon) and seven cities (Naga, Iriga, Legazpi, Ligao, Masbate, Sorsogon and Tabaco) sprawled across more than 18,000 square kilometers of land.

Touted as a land of pilgrimage, pili nuts, spicy food, beautiful churches, virgin islands, and the majestic Mayon Volcano, there’s plenty in store for visitors, both young, old, and everything in between. Around the region, visitors can string together an easy itinerary that will showcase the best assets of each province.

Various bus companies offer transport to the region, among them Cagsawa Tours, Penafrancia, and Superlines. Fares range from P350 (non-aircon) to P750 (aircon deluxe). There is a terminal at the back of Ali Mall Cubao which offers daily bus trips, but this summer season, travelers should book in advance to guarantee seats.

In fact, in 2009, Camarines Sur was visited by more than 900,000 tourists, emerging as the most frequented destination and posting a 52 percent and 260 percent hike in foreign and domestic arrivals, respectively. The tourism investments of the provincial government, notably through the emergence of Caramoan and the wake-boarding resort, stimulated visitor volume, while spurring demand for more accommodations, tour services and transportation.

There’s no way but to go up for the rest of the region. With vibrant tourism traffic, Bicolandia is shaping up as a long-term favorite destination this side of the archipelago.
